However, the most important part of any smudge kit is the herbs or wood. They are the items that actually do the work. The most common of these two used are white sage and Palo Santo sticks. The smells of each are quite different (sage is herbaceous & Palo is sweeter with notes of pine and citrus) but they both provide powerful cleansing properties to the energy of your home and of yourself.
They may even include an abalone shell in which to place the smudge stick or feathers to direct the smoke. Though the feather is certainly not required as it is very simple to direct the smoke naturally.
There are many different ways to utilize a smudge kit as well.
Smudging is a wonderful thing to do when moving into a new home, after an argument, after illness, if you suspect a haunting, or just to revitalize your space. They also make great housewarming gifts.
