A smudge stick is usually White California Sage also known as Salvia Apiana.
When performing the smudging ceremony it gives of smoke which is used to spiritually cleanse the home or a place of gathering.
The practice of smudging is a wonderful thing to do when moving into a new home, after an argument, after illness, if you suspect a haunting, or just to revitalize your space.
It is also used to cleanse an aura or a persons energy which may have become stuck – you can also use it to prepare for ceremony or spiritual work.
Smudge sticks can also be blended with certain flower petals to give a slightly different smoke. Another type of smudge stick is made from cedar, blue sage or Yerba Santa. Each of these have a slightly different smell.
If you find White California Sage too strong smelling consider using Palo Santo sticks as your smudging stick. This has a mild smell and some prefer it.
